Cala de Mijas – La Mairena – Ojén – Istán

Gravel

Cala de MijasIstanOjen

Escape the coast and climb into the wild heart of the Costa del Sol. This gravel mountain bike route links quiet white villages, cork oak forests and shimmering mountain water, all within reach of the beach.

You start beside the sea at Cala de Mijas and soon trade the shoreline for pine-scented hills. The road winds upward toward La Mairena, where the air grows cooler and the views open wide over the Mediterranean.

From there, the landscape turns rugged and green. You roll into Ojén, a whitewashed village that clings to the slopes of the Sierra Blanca. Narrow streets, bright flowerpots and shady plazas invite a slow pause before you push on.

Next, the mountains close in around you. The route drops toward Istán, the “spring of the Costa del Sol”, where the turquoise La Concepción reservoir mirrors the peaks above. Here, water and stone create one of the most striking scenes in the region.

Throughout the ride, forests of pine and cork oak line the way. Hawks circle overhead, and the scent of wild herbs fills the air. Moreover, every climb rewards you with a fresh panorama, from jagged ridgelines to the distant blue coast.

This is Andalusia at its most authentic. Furthermore, the mix of remote villages, dramatic reservoirs and endless mountain vistas makes the journey unforgettable. Therefore, if you crave adventure beyond the resorts, this gravel mountain bike route delivers wild beauty at every turn.

Finally, whether you ride for the challenge or the scenery, the trail connects you to the true spirit of the mountains behind the sea.
