This gravel route from Fuengirola into the hills above the Costa del Sol is one of the most rewarding rides you can do on a mixed-surface bike. It takes you away from the coast and into a landscape that few cycling tourists ever discover.
You start at Terral Bike Shop and head inland straight away. The tracks climb steadily and the scenery changes quickly. Within minutes, the sea drops below you and the hills take over.
The route passes through Rancho de la Paz, a peaceful rural area where gravel paths wind through pine forests and open countryside. It feels like a different world from the busy coastline below. You will find shade, birdsong, and the kind of quiet that only exists away from the resort towns.
The Sierra de Mijas natural area adds another layer to the experience. The tracks here are varied and engaging, threading through fragrant scrubland and ancient woodland. Furthermore, the birdlife and wildflowers make this stretch genuinely special for anyone who loves riding in nature.
The highlight of the ride is Mijas Pueblo itself. This iconic white village sits high above the coast and delivers some of the most breathtaking views on the Costa del Sol. Whitewashed houses, cobbled streets, and flower-filled balconies make every moment here feel special. Stop for a coffee, take in the panorama, and enjoy the reward of the climb.
This is a medium route. It asks for a decent level of fitness and some confidence on mixed terrain. But riders who push through find something rare — a corner of Andalusia that stays with you long after you get back to the coast.
The return leg is one of the great rewards of the day. Fast, flowing, and full of scenery — with the Mediterranean appearing on the horizon as you drop back down towards sea level. It is the perfect ending to a memorable ride in the hills.
