Bikepacking Through Malaga

A multi-stage off-road journey from the coast to the mountains

Malaga is often associated with the coast, sunshine and Mediterranean leisure. But beyond the beaches lies one of the most diverse and mountainous provinces in southern Europe. Long climbs, deep valleys, remote villages and endless dirt roads shape a territory that feels made for bikepacking.

This route is not about ticking off landmarks. It is about crossing Malaga slowly, under your own power, linking the sea with the mountains and discovering how radically the landscape changes day by day.

Why Málaga is perfect for bikepacking

Few regions offer so much variety in such a compact area. Over the course of several days, this route connects:

  • Mediterranean coastline and inland mountain ranges
  • Natural parks, deep forests and dry limestone plateaus
  • White villages, quiet backroads and remote gravel tracks

It is a demanding journey at times, but logical and rewarding. Ideal for riders looking for a true multi-day adventure, without needing to leave southern Spain.

Route overview

  • Format: Circular, multi-stage bikepacking route
  • Terrain: Asphalted roads
  • Bikes: Road Bikes
  • Riding style: Self-supported, steady pacing recommended

Each stage has its own character, shifting from long mountain climbs to rolling valleys and technical descents.

Stage 1 — From the coast to the mountains

Fuengirola → Ronda

Leaving Fuengirola, the route quickly abandons the coastline and heads inland. Traffic fades away as the road begins to climb towards the Sierra de las Nieves, one of the wildest mountain areas in the province.

Long ascents such as Puerto de las Abejas and Puerto del Viento set the tone for the journey. This is a physically demanding first day, but the reward is immediate: silence, forests and panoramic views that feel far removed from the coast.

What to expect:
Sustained climbing, cooler temperatures at altitude, and a strong sense of entering another world.
